The William C. Porter Library Endowment Fund

The William C. Porter Library Endowment Fund

The Barrie Public Library received a very special gift just before Christmas!

In late December 2006 the family of long-time library supporter, Bill Porter donated $10,000 to establish an endowment fund to benefit Barrie Public Library. It will be administered by the Barrie Community Foundation (BCF) to provide annual grants to the library in perpetuity. One of over 150 community foundations across Canada, the BCF was established in April 2005 to support the Barrie and area community through the creation of endowment funds and annual granting to eligible charities. This provides a source of permanent funding by ensuring that the original donation will never be depleted. It is the Porter Family’s hope that their gift will encourage others to add their donation to this endowment to continue encouraging future generations to pursue culture and life-long learning.

Bill was a very dedicated Board Member, originally joining the Barrie Public Library Board of Trustees in 1989. At that time he served on the Board from 1989 - 1991, and then returned to the Board again from 1997 to his death in April, 2006. During his time as a Trustee Bill served willingly as Board Chair and Vice-Chair, plus on many committees. He always brought his careful attention to detail and studied assessments to bear for the best interests of the Library. Bill had great interest in the world around him and a great love for Barrie and, especially Kempenfelt Bay. His enthusiastic support when the Library started the Barrie Dragon Boat Festival was wonderful for all of us, as it brought his two great interests together … the Library and his love for the wind and waves.

Ann Andrusyszyn, Development Officer at Barrie Public Library, knows that Bill would have been delighted with his family’s choice to honour the Library in this way. “Mr. Porter was a Library Trustee when endowments first started being discussed here in the late 90s and it is wonderful for this to come full circle and for us to see his name on the first Library endowment at the Barrie Community Foundation”, said Andrusyszyn. “Bill Porter was a strong believer in public libraries, and especially in the way Barrie Public Library keeps on enriching our community.”
